Indiana: Another change of scenery

🇬🇧 We crossed Indiana to the very north of the state and only rode there the equivalent of 4 days. The state is located between Ohio and Illinois and we did not have huge expectations for it as it was just a road for us to reach our next big destination: Chicago. Finally, we were pleasantly surprised by the beauty of these landscapes and the charm of the Amish communities along the road. Indiana stands out from its neighbors with a slightly more hilly terrain and less straight roads. So more diversity for us who spend our days on the road.

We had the chance to cross La Grange County, which apparently has the 3rd largest Amish community in the United States. We often stopped to take pictures as for us, it was really unique to come across these horse-drawn carriages filled with families who greeted us kindly on the road. There were various specialized businesses along the road leading us to assume that they can easily manage to live independently within their community.

Then there were the experiences with hosts from the Warmshowers network that will undoubtedly mark us for a long time. Rory and David from South Bend who acquired an old farmhouse two years ago and can now welcome their 15 grandchildren as their house and surrounding yards are so huge. We quickly felt like members of their family as the welcome was so friendly. Then Lynn and John from Chesterton with whom we will undoubtedly continue to maintain contact for a long time. Both have an extraordinary joie de vivre and Sylvie shares with them a passion for cooking. We ate there like nowhere else and left with our panniers full of little touches that Lynn absolutely wanted to share with us.

We also enjoyed this afternoon spent at the Indiana Dunes State Park. The weather was amazing and we were able to enjoy the beach, the lake and the great view of the city of Chicago in the distance.
